Meet Stratos Roussos - General Practitioner at Rapid Creek Clinic

“It is a real privilege to work here! Danila Dilba is growing exponentially, yet it is still staying true to holistic healthcare and better outcomes for the community.”

Both experienced with and passionate about Aboriginal health, Stratos Roussos started working with Danila Dilba in December 2016. He works at the Rapid Creek Clinic as a GP and within the Medicines Review Committee - reviewing medicine costs which aren’t subsidised to patients.

His experience in primary health care started as a medical student when he undertook a placement in central Australia within an Aboriginal community. He has spent the rest of his career following this passion, working remotely, as a locum and at hospitals in the Red Centre.

Why Danila Dilba?

“I have just started a family, so with young children, my wife and I decided we needed a change to a bigger city. I still wanted to be involved in Aboriginal health and remain in that space. Danila Dilba is the primary service in Darwin and provided the lifestyle change that we needed.

I really enjoy working for such a progressive Aboriginal Health organisation, focused on engaging with people on an individual level.”

Working in this space provides rapid opportunity for development. Stratos felt that this was something he experienced through ongoing learning workshops and through his ability to teach incoming registrars.

“We really do get ongoing education and opportunities for progression here. Once a month on a Friday afternoon we have a clinical education session combined with a staff meeting. It’s also exciting that part of my role is teaching registrars. Being able to really engage in that process is very rewarding.”

Aboriginal Health Services play a vital role in communities across Australia, in their contribution to closing the gap for Aboriginal health care. As Stratos describes, working in the AHS space is not always easy, but when you reach outcomes, it is so rewarding.

“At the end of the day, my motivation for being here is better health outcomes for the population we serve. The reward can be amazing. We help people with complex or chronic issues and work as a team to empower them to make better health management decisions and better health choices, to move their lives forward.”

The diversity of the role is another attractive factor for Stratos. Every day brings a different challenge and a range of complex and interesting solutions that he can put forward and develop.

“One day I am the duty doctor for the clinic, the next I will have a general day of seeing clients and the next I will be doing paperwork… We get a lot of people coming back as regular clients, and that’s where I really see the success.”
